In order to install CGI scripts several important steps are necessary. Please check that you have followed these steps accurately:
  • ReadMe File
  • Path to Perl
  • Sendmail
  • Upload Scripts
  • Set Permissions
ReadMe File
All scripts come with a ReadMe file. It contains detailed instructions on customizing the script for your server and other details like your email address, homepage URL, etc. Read it carefully. It contains the following items on this Help page as steps to installing the script.

Path to Perl
All scripts have the Path to Perl as the first line at the very top of the script. Never put a space between it and the top of the script. Be sure it stays at the very top. The first thing to do when installing a script is to make sure the Path to Perl is correct for your server. Your hosting company can tell you the Path to Perl for your server. It will look something like this:

/usr/local/bin/perl
or
/usr/bin/perl

The top line of the script adds #! in front of it, so you end up with a top line that looks like this:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl
or
#!/usr/bin/perl

Sendmail
If your script requires email to be sent to you or the user, be sure the script has the correct path to Sendmail for your server. Your hosting company can tell you what the path is for your server. It will look something like:

/usr/sbin/sendmail
or
/usr/lib/sendmail

Upload Scripts
Scripts should be uploaded in ASCII mode. Be sure you are not uploading the scripts in Binary mode. If you use WS_FTP, select the checkbox next to ASCII located on the lower part of the program before uploading the scripts. Binary is selected by default.

Set Permissions
Setting permissions means that you allow certain functions to be performed on or by a script. CGI scripts should have permissions set to 755. Log files that will collect data while the script is functioning should have permissions set to 777. If you use WS_FTP, select the script after it is uploaded, right-click it, then click on "chmod (UNIX)". To set script permissions to 755, check all 3 boxes for Read, only the box under Owner for Write, and all 3 boxes for Execute. To set log file permissions to 777, check all 3 boxes for Read, Write and Execute so every box is checked.
